the bargains are definatly harder to come by. time to look is a major key,i used to spend a long time looking now i buy what i like/need(ahh the addiction)if a bargain pops up bonus if not work overtime.

i would never buy from a zippo retailer in the uk a you need a loan just to buy a standard zippo, even the naval lighters i used to buy cost a fortune and thats going back a few years now.

No,Not a cobra head.from what I know about them they did not use them for long and I was under the impression they did not use them at all on the gold filled.I might be wrong but thats how I understood it.If you or anyone else has more info please let me know.Fact is I don't have any slims that still even have the cobra left.they broke off pretty easy.Jeff aka bigbaddad

She's gorgeous Jeff & as usual what a bargain, wish I knew more about them too. Perhaps AndyZip or Ira? Poore says they introduced the slim gold & silver fills in '56 & that both the 56 & 57 had the same date codes but only the '56 ones had the cobra head (should have checked b4 I posted the ? sorry). Did you see the reg size one that went up on Ebay recently??Whew - 7 known to exist thusfar.

OK Paul,I did a little checking and yes the slims first year is 56 and the 56 models did have the cobra head insert. The cobra was fazed out pretty fast at the end of 56 or the first part of 57.The gold filled did not start production til 57 after the cobras were fazed out so, it would not have had a cobra head insert. The difference between the 57 and 58 date code on the slim is 57 had 4&4 dots with patent pending on the insert and the 58 had 4&3 with no patent pending on the insert.Gold filled did not have either patent on the outside but only had it on the inserts. Boy that info was not as hard to find as some of my other questions on Zippo's.Jeff aka bigbaddad so the bidding starts at.....?

I am thinking about listing the gold filled slim but have no idea for a value on it.Its from the first year they did them. The box is a bit stained and one barrel on the box hinge is broken. The lighter is in fantastic shape but the insert has a few small blems on it.Never lit but looks more like a little pit mark on it.Anyone have an idea for value? If you need some photos for a better idea of condition let me know and I could email some.Jeff aka bigbaddad

Well after much reading of MY NEW David Poore edition 2 it is a gold filled 56.Now my question is,The cobra head issue on the gold filled is kind of left open with not enough info to let me know if it should or should not have one.The insert stamp is the original 56 stamp but it is said that could still be in a 57.If it had the cobra removed in the factory there should be a mark where it was removed like on the regular slim inserts in 57 but there is no evidence there was ever a cobra head to be removed.Does anyone know if the gold filled should have a cobra head? The value in the book is more then enough to make me happy with my buy but I would still like to know for sure about the insert/cobra issue.bbd

Jeff - I think you'll have to try direct with David Poore or Ira on that one (perhaps Linda kchmenow) - there seems to be a general shortage of info on them unfortunately. First one I ever saw Linda showed me at the swap last year & since then was desperately hunting for one as they're so unusual (& no I'm not normally into slims) - finally managed to get one about 4 mths back - used without box. Even the early slim boxes are darned hard to come by which is why I was oohing & aahing over yours.
