Good on yer, Jeff - the Poore is a beaut. It's been a constant companion for a few years now, recently got the 2nd edition which altho' it has a few less pages contains more & better info. My only concern with both of 'em is that there's nothing on the Canada releases. I've slowly built up a small library & the Poore is at the top info-wise. The Japan manuals are great esp. #3 followed by #1 (#'s 2,4 & 5 not quite as good, & #6 is all in Japanese & a lot slimmer). Jim Fiorella's "The Vietnam Zippo" is great for lighters from that period esp. for identifying fakes & the different logos for the units that were there. Philip Taggart's "Zippo Advertising Lighters - Cars & Trucks" is also a goodie if that's your interest, & Pilossof & Schneider's "The Golden Age of Cigarette Lighters" is also a goodie for a general overview of old lighters of many brands incl. quite a good section on Zippos. But still the bottom line for hardcore info is the Poore - the others help flesh it out a litle, hope this helps.

Paul, don't forget also the one by Russell E. Lewis that came out last year and was so well received by members in ZC! Although not as good for lighters it does have a lot of advertisements. I found the same as you regarding the Zippo Japanese manuals, leafed through them at the NZD last year and decided that 1 & 3 were the best and the are a wealth of info.

Cheers Bob, didn't mention the Russell Lewis as I thought it was overall fairly disappointing, & also didn't mention the smallish book by Avi Bauer (sorry can't remember the name of it) but would place it in the same category as the Lewis. Am greatly looking forward to Mike's (kdsinc) forthcoming book on non-lighter Zippo products (eg knives, retractable clotheslines, ashtrays, pillboxes, magnifying glasses, golfballs, Zipslip etc) as info on most of that sort of stuff is darned hard to come by.

P.S. forgot to mention also a small booklet by Tobias Kuhn on Zippo's being a design icon - interesting but not really any help to collectors.

Avi Bauer's book is called Zippo: An American Legend. A Collector's Companion. Pretty good info, nice pics etc. But then again, I don't have the Poore book yet, so I have nothing to compare it to yet.

Well ,a long time ago on a not to be mentioned again by me Zippo collecting site we talked about the books and I was not a big fan of them.To me it always seemed as if the guy writing the books was just trying to boost the value of their own collections. As we know by this thread I finally broke down and got Poore's first edition.More because I got it cheap on ebay more then any other reason.Since getting the first one I have become a convert to the books.I love the thing and look it over all the time.Yesterday when I checked my mail I got the surprise of my life.A very good friend sent me the second edition.I love this!!I have made many good, close friends over the years due to the simple little fact I collect the Zippo's and I am always in awe at how close many of us have gotten to be.No matter how far apart we are, we are as close if not closer then friends I have had my entire life and see all the time.I wanted to thank Paul here in the forums.Paul ,Thanks for being a great friend and a true mate!!May your Zippos never go dry and you flints always remain solid!!BBD
