Ok, this '43-'45 insert has a problem. When i got this the seller said that the Cam Spring was replaced with a newer one. Ok. that's fine. I can fix this.
Come to find out, after taking all the goodies out. That, one the wick was less than a inch long. (no lie) And the replace Camspring was a home job. they used a cheep brass pop rivet. But it didn't crush strait, it crushed to the side. leaving the hole half the size it should be. No wonder the wick was so short, he must have shreaded it trying to get it in. But all that is the least of my worries.
The dumb F**K drilled out the old rivet. That's ok, but it looks like it slipped off the rivet and wound up drilling a hole next to the Chimney wall.
So now the question....... How can i fill this hole?
I was thinking lead, any other easy ideas.

Just so we are on the same plain, i have already taken out the Cam Spring. I've already tried using lead to fill the hole but not happy with the results. Spanish Flea

Bondo, no good. I don't want to leave behind a pink spot. LOL.
I may use JB Weld. That's a good idea snake. It will blend in too.

flea, Is that hole right through? I had thought JB Weld as well. If the hole is clear through I'd be thinking to back up the hole first with a small scrap of metal from the inside affixed with JB and a bit more top side to fill the depression.

i had to fix a hole in my moms sink one time i used this stuff like jb weld except it came in a stick(like cookie dough), the stuff doesnt strink at all but do alittle at a time and fill it in, it can be sanded down real easy, if its too thin and caves in you can put more in on top of it, its better than viagra, hard in 10 mins workable after an hour.

High temp solder 900 degree or better is the only thing that will work to fix it.Bondo or other body filler will fail over time due to the heat of the wick.bbd

I'll try the JBWeld. If it fails over time, i'll deal with it then. It's not going to be a daily user, but it will be used from time to time. The hole is through and through. I will back it before i fill. Been there don't that, a few times. Plus it's a bit tricky working in such a tight space. Cant really get any files in there for finish work. Spanish Flea

Any of the solders they used at Zippo will not be harmed by the 900.I have fixed a few inserts that had rust blow outs on them and it always worked for me.bbd

I'm sure it will. But i'm not to concerned about it right now. It's not going to be a daily user, but it will be used. And it's not in a visible spot. But............ I should have renamed this thread as repairing a '43-'45 insert. Ran into a new prob. It's rather funny. I soaked the insert in some Metal Prep by POR15. (This stuff is great for taking care of rust, my insert had some rust on the inside. Plus it leaves a coating that will ward of future rust.) Anywasy, i rinsed it off and was using my aircompresser and the Cam Rivit shot out and bounced across my gurage floor.... .....LOL. luckly i found it. I love a chalange but.....I should have left it alone. Spanish Flea
