whilst cleaning an insert yesterday i found a solid block of white material instead of the cotton wool.is this common?ive never seen it before? Zippo tried a new cotton thing. It didn't work out to well. I think they did it in '67 or '68. i think, don't have my book in front of me. It didn't even last a year. so it's kinda rare. As in don't throw it away. But when you replace the wick. don't cram the wick at the top of the insert. Get the wick to go down the side of the insert and tuck the rest under the felt. That way the wick can draw fluid from the whole cotton block. Spanish Flea

Flea,
I'd be interested to know what book you are looking in, as I can't find any reference to this in any of the books I have (Maybe I'm not looking hard enough!) Lowden asked a similar question in Click a few days ago, I do have a handful of these all dated 68-69, but some have said mid 60's to 1970

Just looked in me books, and i didn't see it. I don't remember where i saw it, but it is one of those "one year only" things.

Standard cotton wool balls, from most chemists will do the job, 4 or 5 should be enough, don't overpack them.

While we're on that subject then...
A man walks into a pharmacy and wanders up & down the aisles. The sales girl notices him and asks him if she can help him. He answers that he is looking for a box of tampons for his wife. She directs him down the correct aisle. A few minutes later, he deposits a huge bag of cotton balls and a ball of string on the counter. She says, confused, "Sir, I thought you were looking for some tampons for your wife? He answers, "You see, it's like this, yesterday, I sent my wife to the store to get me a carton of cigarettes, and she came back with a tin of tobacco and some rolling papers; cause it's sooo-ooo--oo-ooo much cheaper. So, I figure if I have to roll my own .......... so does she.
