Thanks, i take pride in my work.
I used a sonic cleaner, small one i got off ebay, for cleaning jewelery. A brass brush to clean the heavy gunk off. and a plastic mascara brush to give the small places a brushing. The mix i use in the sonic cleaner is 1 part water/ 1 part degreaser. Does the job.
With the above zippo i replace the Snow White Wick (SWW) with a new one. The SWW was to short to reuse. The Cotton was replaced with Zippo Cotton, they were very dirty too. And the Felt pad was replaced with a new one.
Oh, and i used some metal polish to shine up the case. I like these Nickle Cases, they shine up and look like silver.

Score! I was right.
How long does it take for you to clean those dirtier zippo's you have (on average)?
And do you keep everything you change... wicks, cotton, felt pad...

I'm quite the packrat, i keep everything zippo, I'll post some pix of my stash. But i even keep the dirty stuff. 1 can of clean unused zippo cotton. 1 can of dirty used zippo cotton. Parts box, holds, extra inserts, insert parts, ie, Camsprings, Flintwheels, Cams, etc, etc, Spanish Flea

how-to, with and without the sonic cleaner. and how much did that sonic cleaner cost? It would come in handy with a few computer things too I'm currently working on a how-2. Well really it's a book. But i will have some stuff on my website too. Really every zippo has different problems, and i listing the ways to deal with those problems. The sonic cleaner i got off ebay for about $15. It's a small one for jewelery. The sonic cleaner takes most of the gunk off. I then go back and use a plastic brush to scrub the insert and case clean. I use different brushes. Brass Brush- i use before i sonic clean, to break up the caked on junk around the Flint wheel Eyelet, and the cam. Also used to break up the tar around the top and back side of the Chimney. Toothbrush- I use to after i sonic clean. To get the dirt residue off. I've modified my tooth brush so it can get into smaller places. Mascara Brush- These are great to get in the small spaces of the Chimney, and under the Cam spring. Pipe Cleaners- Used to clean out the Flint Tube, and the Eyelet, and Rivets. Also used to clean the Chimney. Toothpicks- Used when the sonic cleaner doesn't get the caked on junk inside the Cap or Chimney. Used to scrub stubborn stuff. Popsicle Sticks- Used like the toothpicks, when i need something a little stronger. Plus these can be cut to any shape i need. It helps a lot. As you can see, my kit contains a lot of stuff. I don't just dip it. One thing i should stress is after you clean it. Rinse it really good with clean water, and dry it right away. I have a aircompresser in the garage that i use to dry. You don't want water to stand on the insert. The Cam and Flint Wheel can rust. Spanish Flea

It does't take more than 10 min. Most of the time it's in the sonic cleaner. Mine comes factory set with a 2min timer. So i'll run it a couple of times through, then scrub, and one more run through the sonic. Well worth the time if you ask me.

thats about the same for me w/out the sonic cleaner, except for light cleaning i use a degreaser like simple green and plenty of water with a toothbrush, toothpicks
for heavy stuff or for an insert that hasent been cleaned in 15 years, i use a mild toothpaste with plenty of water
to dry i sit it close to an incadesent lamp, if you get it too hot it discolors the brass on the flint tube and inside case, but that comes off with tarnX
after rethreading the wick i clamp it to the chimney with a pair of forceps, that way it doesnt move around when repacking the insert.
