Hi guys and girls -- you may have already seen this post - I posted before I had to re-register and can't find the old one now. So, here I go again: We've all seen the news, and the devastation in the Louisiana area (and surrounding areas) is incredible. It's almost as bad as the Tsunami. I've listed two zippos for charity on ebay. Neither are big-deal Zippos (but the zippos are not the point). 100% of the proceeds go to Americares for Hurricane Kristina Relief. I will not take a dime out of the proceeds, and will also donate the shipping charges to the charity. Here's the links: cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=952&item=6205547222 cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=952&item=6205535376 Please - do like you did last time I listed a charity auction and go bid! These poor people down there - it's breaking my heart. They have nothing - no homes, no jobs, they're having a hard time just getting water and food. So let's do what we can to help. Bid with your hearts - I know you've all got big hearts. Thanks in advance,

Hey that's a good idea, I really do feel sorry for the people in Louisiana. To everyone hurt by this storm, good luck.

Joanne,On behalf of all of my family that still live in Mississippi I want to thank you.I myself have already made arangments to send all I can afford to send directly to my relatives to help. The reason I am responding to this thread is not to get my numbers up but, I do not want it to get burried.I want every one to see it and remember what is going on.I have never, until now had anyone I love be affected by anything like this in the past. Now that it has hit so many people that I have a direct connection to it really hits home.I have over 60 cousins, aunts and uncles down there and it is going to take years for them to recover. So long and short,Thank you for caring Joanne.I knew I could count on you for this type of post.Jeff aka bigbaddad ps.A big karma to you Joanne!!!

I got one up too. Please bid big and often.
*edit* Ebay pulled my auction, i guess because i didn't go through Mission Fish. and after looking at the fees i would have to pay, for using them, i'm not going to relist. Don't think it's right for this Fish co. to make money off of donations. */edit*

Jeff, I'm so sorry to hear that you and your family and friends have been directly affected by this disaster. My thoughts and prayers are with you and yours.
To answer Spanish Flea's concerns (which are definitely VALID concerns regarding the missionfish/ebay giving works' fees) - I'm posting the "donation chart" here. And, like you said, Jeff) - this will keep this thread alive.
"When an eBay user lists an item through Giving Works and donates 100% of the final sale price to a nonprofit: The donation amount = donation percent X final sale price; OR $10 (whichever is greater). MissionFish deducts $3 + 2.9% from the donation The seller is responsible for all eBay and PayPal fees [glow=red,2,300]eBay will donate their insertion and final value fees to the nonprofit if the item sells[/glow] Sample transaction Final sale price $100.00 Donation percent 100% Donation due $100.00 MissionFish fee $3.00 MissionFish credit card fee $2.90 (2.9%) eBay fee donation $4.12 Nonprofit receives: $98.22
Hopefully, the auctions go to $100, and ebay kicks in the fees - but if they don't, I'm fine with paying them myself. Missionfish DOES work best with auctions that donate 100%, though. For instance, if the auction is only 50% for charity, and it ends at $50, then the charity ends up with about $45.00.
Any way you look at it, and whoever you donate to (whether it be through ebay/missionfish, or directly to the Red Cross, etc.) - they take a fee (they may not even disclose it to the public) - but they DO take a fee for their "administrative costs/overhead". Some disclose the fee, others don't.
Either way - charity is charity and whether you donate personally or through ebay or even if you just donate prayers, you're doing a good thing. ("You", meaning everyone in general).
:-)
PS - I've got Karma! :-)))))))) That said - I want Spanish Flea's avatar for myself! :-)

[sound] Ping [/sound] "You've got Karma!" I know most Charaties will take a fee. But a lot don't. With that, i have a couple of friends, and a couson that work for the Fire Dept. They have been out doing a boot drive these last few days. So i gave to them.
Plus i have been praying. Spanish Flea

A big Karma to my good mate Paul. Thanks much for the little bit of love you sent to me and the family.I myself am trying to arrange a truck load of donations to go down to Ol'Miss.I will be trying to get it done with my local Disabled American Vets.Any one can help even if it's just dropping of one can of food to a local group sending things down south.Diapers, baby food and stuff like that are needed really badly.Little things we take for granted are also needed.Might not need to be food or cash but even books and kids stuff can and will be used.Love and karma out to all that are trying to help.Update for those who have asked. All of my family have been accounted for and all are alive and well.Much to re-build but at least they are alive, healthy and together.Jeff aka bigbaddad

Hi Freddy -- Send it to Jeff - he seems to know the best way to utilize it. BTW - Linda (kchmenow1 on ebay) is also running a few charity auctions, in case anyone wants to bid - and/or outbid me. LOL Joanne

if you are donating, check to make sure the organization is 501-C tax exempt, (disregard if your foreign) but basically they HAVE to be non profet to get the exemption (they dont pay US income tax) and anything you donate to them can be used as a deduction off your taxes as well www.irs.gov/charities/charitable/index.html

We had a meeting at my local chapter of the Disabled American Vets and we decided it would be better to send down cash then to wait for a truck load of donations to be collected and driven down.We are going to be working directly with other Vets groups directly in the areas that need help. The DAV is also non-profit.Most Vets orginazations try to work independent from other groups and focus on Vets and Vets issues .It most likely a pride thing.Vets taking care of Vets but on this one they are trying to help all that need it, vet or not.I talked to one of my cousins this morning via email and she said they are lucky and were able to stock up on gas food and water but so many people have Nothing and no way out.I am lucky enough to have some very special friends that have passed on money to me and it went directly to the funds being sent down there. No money is being taken out and all is going to the people that need it.The Dav is all volunteer and no one gets a cut from donations.Right now things are getting done and will continue as long as it needs to.Thanks to all who have showed concern for my family and all the people affected.Jeff aka bigbaddad
